Governors’ Information

The Role of the Governing Body

The Governing Body works with the Headteacher and school leaders to help St Michael’s Junior School provide the best possible education for all pupils. Governors are responsible for the strategic leadership of the school. This means we help set the school’s direction, support and challenge school leaders, and make sure the school is safe, well-run, and financially secure. We do not manage the school day to day – that is the responsibility of the Headteacher and leadership team.

Governors act as a critical friend to the Headteacher, offering support while also asking challenging questions. We monitor the school’s development priorities, oversee the school’s finances to ensure money is spent wisely, and make sure safeguarding arrangements and key policies are in place to keep children and staff safe. Governors also visit the school to see how things work in practice, including talking with pupils and staff.

Who are the governors?

Our governors come from a range of backgrounds and bring different skills and experiences. Governors usually serve a four-year term and take part in regular training provided by the Local Authority and the Diocese, reflecting our status as a Church of England school. The current members of the governing body is shown below.

Staffing and leadership

Governors are involved in key leadership appointments, including the Headteacher. A small group of governors also works with the Headteacher on pay decisions, following national guidance and school policy.
